The Keilor Sports Club commissioned a mural on its renovated club rooms to show thanks to the Keilor Community for their ongoing support over many years. Melbourne Airport have partnered with the Sports Club on the mural and it was agreed to show the history of the Keilor District, rather than focus on Sport.
For context and guidance, the image depicts the following focuses;
- Bunjil the Eagle looks over Keilor. The traditional land owners, the Wurundjeri people, believed Bunjil the Eagle created the land we live on after originating as a falling star.
- The mural depicts people travelling through Keilor on their way to the goldfields to seek their fortune around Castlemaine, Bendigo and further north to the Inglewood area.
- The wooden bridge is the old Arundel Road Bridge down in the market gardens. It was opened in 1904 largely to service the vast Arundel estate and unfortunately met it’s demise in the 2022 floods.
- The iron basket bridge was constructed in the 1850s as a direct response to cater for the gold fields traffic. It is of historical significance and is classified as one of the earliest examples of fabricated iron bridges in Victoria.
- The goal posts and the rooms depict the early club rooms of the Keilor Football and Cricket Clubs.
- The Keilor hotel was 1st built in 1849 and is the last remaining hotel of the 12 which were in the Keilor District during the gold rush. The photo depicting the hotel was taken around 1910.
- The market gardens are represented by Anthony Senserrick, a great Sports Club person in his father, Jack’s, fully laden truck on his way to market.
- The footballer is from a photo taken in the early 1900s, in the original playing jumper, alongside a local cricketer, to pay tribute to the long standing history & relationship both sports have in the community.
